NATIONAL TEAM SELECTION
Each year, AIDA International hosts two World Championship competitions, one pool and one depth. These occur at different locations throughout the world. Attending a world championship is a magical experience and we encourage every athlete to apply! Typical world championships have hundreds of athletes from all over the world, representing every participating country.
During the experience you will compete beside people of all different levels, witness record performances, and participate in one of the best sport camaraderies in the world. You will likely walk away from this experience with lifelong friends and many new travel destinations on your bucket list. Athletes of all levels are encouraged to apply! What better way to learn than being surrounded by all of the top athletes in the world?
The purpose of Team Canada is to bring attention to the sport through international competition, inspire Canadian athletes to excel at freediving, and to increase the benefits of the mentorship program that elite athletes bring to the Canadian community. Team Canada athletes will represent our country and adhere to the AIDA Canada code of conduct.
Team Canada is made up of three male and three female divers in each discipline. The pool disciplines are STA, DYN, DYNB and DNF. The depth disciplines are FIM, CWT, CWTB and CNF.
Applications to join Team Canada open in December and the team is selected in January. If the team is not full, AIDA Canada will continue to accept applications. Once an athlete is selected to the team, they cannot be bumped from competing if a more experienced athlete joins the team later. Athletes will be selected in each discipline based on their competition results over the last year, with consideration of their all-time performances.
To encourage participation on the global stage, each year AIDA Canada will provide three athletes from each gender a scholarship of $500 after they have successfully competed in the World Championships. If more than three athletes of each gender, attend the World championships, then the athletes who complete performances in the most disciplines will receive the scholarship money. When you complete your application, please indicate which World championships you're interested in attending, and which disciplines you would like to compete in. In each discipline, please list your competition best result from the previous year, as well as your best competition result of all time.
In addition to the funding provided by AIDA Canada, AIDA International typically also provides funding to help athletes keep costs down in competing. There tends to be many different housing options, allowing our budget-friendly divers to compete.

Athletes must respect the following conditions when applying for the national team: Must be a Canadian citizen with a valid passport. Ensure that any sponsorship is in the best interests of Canada's national governing body, Team Canada or the individual athlete, and avoid any conflict of interest. The AIDA Canada Board of Directors will approve each sponsorship. However, such approval will only be withheld on reasonable grounds. Therefore, all logos on wetsuits, clothing, etc., must be approved by the AIDA Canada Board of Directors. If an athlete accepts these conditions, but appears with logos that have not been approved by AIDA Canada, at any time during the World Championships, that athlete will not be permitted to participate.
We look forward to reviewing your applications and are excited to have you represent Canada on the world stage!
